πŸ—“οΈ ASL Sign of the Day: YEAR

Both S-hands β€” dominant revolves once around non-dominant like Earth orbiting the sun. July Time Expressions, Episode 12.

Gallery

July Time Expressions series, Episode 12 β€” YEAR.
Both hands start as S-handshapes (closed fists). Stack the dominant fist on top of the non-dominant fist at chest height, knuckles facing forward. Then let the dominant fist revolve forward in one full circle around the non-dominant fist β€” like Earth completing its orbit around the Sun.
That circular revolution is the sign. One clean orbit = one year.
Quick tip: Keep the revolution smooth and circular. A jerky or incomplete arc reads as a different sign β€” commit to the full 360Β°.

Card breakdown

Card 1 β€” Starting Handshape Both S-hands stacked at chest height, dominant on top of non-dominant. Knuckles face forward. This is both the starting and ending position of the sign.
Card 2 β€” Motion Dominant S-fist revolves forward and downward in a full 360Β° arc around the non-dominant fist. The teal arrow shows the orbital path. Non-dominant hand stays fixed as the axis.
Card 3 β€” Ending Handshape After the full revolution, the dominant fist returns to rest on top of the non-dominant fist β€” back to the exact starting position. One orbit, one year.
Card 4 β€” In Context "I was born 28 years ago." β€” ASL gloss: ME BORN 28 YEAR AGO. The YEAR sign appears once for each year count; for numbers, sign the number first, then YEAR.
